HANNA ARNOLD DIAPERS DIRECT OF MICHIGAN hen I was a little girl, I always wanted to be popular. Who didn't? Thinking it was looks that would put me over the top, I would curl my hair in a Farrah Fawcett-inspired hair- do, spend my paper route mon- ey on Jordache jeans and wear Bonnie Bell strawberry-flavored lip gloss and Love's Baby Soft perfume. I was ignored. I played sports, thinking that was the key. Needless to say, the bumps and bruises did nothing for my looks and my less than graceful skills were the cause of both pity and laughter. Still, I was ignored (except for the pity and laughter). One friend suggested allow- ing the boys to peek up my skirt; it worked for her. I wasn't about to go there. I am glad I didn't: I later heard my friend became a teen-age mother. Finally, the answer came to me. While dis- tributing treats for my birthday, I found food was my magnet. People didn't care so much what was in my brain or on my body but rather what I could feed them. I was an in- stant celebrity. That lesson came back to me recently when I hosted the first anniial Kosher Bites Cookout for the staff. I didn't mind shlepping to the store to find five kinds of low-fat wieners, four kinds of baked beans and five kinds of barbecue sauces. I didn't mind slaving over two grills in the hot sun. I was the most popular co- worker that day. I actually re- ceived a round of applause. Yes, I was popular. For the first part of the taste test, we sampled low-fat dogs from Shofar, Best, Rubashkin's, Hebrew Nation- al and Shor Harbor. Calorie counts ranged from 100 for Shofar to 120 for Rubashkin's, Hebrew Nation- al and Shor Harbor; fat grams ranged from eight grams for Shor Harbor, Rubashkin's and Shofar to 10 grams for Hebrew National; sodium levels went from a low of 300 milligrams for Shofar to 480 milligrams for Best's. The prices for the seven to eight hot-dog packages were $2.99 for Hebrew National to $3.99 for Best's Shor Harbor and Rubashkin's. cated, highly scientific test to see if any of the hot dogs were losers. First, I purchased the five packages of dogs for a total of 37 wieners. Next, I cooked them up and served 35 of them (two fell into the fire) to the staff. Then, I waited. In less than half an hour, the dogs were done. Best's Kosher Lower Fat Beef Frankfurters "Tangy, juicy, good taste." — Lynne Cohn "Delicious.
