lem still exists. Illness is not a
random event; it does have con-
nection to the patient. Holistic
health is more like an approach )
to life. Rather than focusing on --\
a specific symptom, holistic
health considers the whole per-
son and how that person inter-
acts with others and the
environment.
"I encourage my patients to ac-
cept responsibility for their own
level of well-being in the every-
day choices they make. A per-
son's health is not dependent
solely on the quality of the
healthcare he receives."
Alternative medicine encom-
passes a dozen different types of
care and often the issue is how
to differentiate these treatments
in a highly regulated medical
health care system. However, the
increase in the number of med-
ical school courses covering al-
ternative therapies indicates that
some of these therapies will be
eventually accepted.
More surprising is that alter-
native medicine is becoming in-
tegrated into managed care. In
October, Oxford Health Plans of
Connecticut announced it would
begin offering an alternative-
medicine benefit to its group pur-
chases in 1997.
Some problems remain, how-
ever. Despite alternative medi-
cine's growing acceptability,
there is a concern about the use
of largely unregulated natural
products. Most health care plans
do not cover natural products of-
ten because most are not formu-
lated according to specific federal
guidelines.
It is likely that major battle
lines will be drawn among the _)
pharmaceutical companies, com-
panies that produce vitamin and
mineral supplements, govern-
ment regulatory agencies, and
medical professionals.
In the meantime, the issue is
how to strike the balance be-
tween alternative medicine and
the more traditional medical
practices. The most likely answer
is not very earth shattering. It
simply means that patients be
well-informed about their own
health, about their options for
good health care, as well as mak-
ing certain that the health care
professionals they seek are tru-
ly the experts in their field.
The U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention report
that the key factors influencing
an individual's state of health
have not changed significantly
over the past 20 years. Quality
of medical care is 10 percent,
heredity accounts for 18 percent,
environment is 19 percent and
everyday lifestyle choices are 53
percent.
The decisions people make
about their life and habits have
the biggest influence in deter- ,
mining their state of wellness_\
— a major tenet of holistic med-
icine. 0
