The Holocaust Memorial Cen- ter recently cited Mr. Trunsky as the first docent to guide 1,000 tours through the facility since it opened in 1984. According to the HMC's Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, Mr. Trunsky has earned a reputation among the guides for maintaining his com- posure and focus. On a recent tour, a young man looks distracted and tries to flirt with another student. Across the way, a young woman hasn't taken her eyes off Mr. Trunsky since the tour began and is steadily losing her battle not to cry. "I think he's had a significant impact on the tours," says Rab- bi Rosenzveig. "He's particular- ly adept at areas of Jewish history." Mr. Trunksy has no inten- tions of slowing the pace of his volunteer schedule. Rodger Trunsky's steadily increasing role in Crown Steel's operation creates more time for Mr. Trun- sky to pursue additional phil- anthropic endeavors. Rodger brings a new array of general entrepreneurial skills to the business to compliment his inherited knowledge and good family business name, says Mr. Trunsky. Although profits have grown steadily under Rodger's watch, he is careful to emulate the examples set by his father. "I think the measure of my dad is more than 50 years in the rail business. I think it's more in the business of giving for 50 years because it's much harder," says Rodger. ❑ ‘ AI RIO u c H - Cellular An easy call to make-- Lake Orion 2531 South Lapeer Road (Orion Mall, two miles north of the Palace) 810-393-6800 Southfield 26935 Northwestern Hwy. 810-915-3000 28117 Telegraph Road (south of 12 Mile) 810-358-3700 Taylor 23495 Eureka Road (across from Southland Mall) 313-287-1770 century in the rail industry, he has observed the American steel rail market dry up and the con- solidation from over 30 class 1 railroads to five, says Dr. Taylor. Since the demise of Bethlehem Steel and Colorado Steel and Iron, Mr. Trunsky imports most of his product from Japan, Ko- rea, Canada and Luxembourg. Although he followed his fa- ther into the railroad field, Mr. Trunsky chose a path of depar- ture from the corporate culture prevalent among class 1 rail- roads to one where he felt free to express his own values. The primary upside to owning Crown Steel Rail to Mr. Trun- sky is the flexibility to accom- modate his schedule of volunteer activities. Mr. Trunsky says volun- teerism has helped him cope with memories of an icy rela- tionship with his step-mother and callous, workaholic father. Recognition, says Mr. Trunsky, and a sense of connection to oth- ers involved in his volunteer ac- tivities inspires him to pursue philanthropic projects with as much enthusiasm as he does steel rail. Temple Israel's House Minyan Committee was formed to ensure mourners observing shiva would have access to a minyan. Be- tween 1964 and 1981, Mr. Trun- sky committed three to four evenings per week to spear- heading the group and comfort- ing bereaved members of Temple Israel's congregation. "Imagine a man at the age of 70 who volunteers to be an ush- er at services," says Rabbi M. Robert Syme of Temple Israel.
