to how thoroughly and enduring-
ly the Inquisition succeeded. Yet,
the fact that non-Jews, including
all the local guides and scholars
we met, are spearheading the ex-
tensive effort, which gives hope
that education may prevent an-
other such chapter being written
in their history.
Toledo and Segovia are both
about an hour from Madrid, in the
relatively arid central Spain.
Girona is near the verdant east
coast, a couple of hours from
Barcelona, close to the French
border. Each city offers unique
glimpses of our roots among oth-
er attractions.
The largest Jewish quarter was
in Toledo, which once contained
at least 10 synagogues and five
"praying houses." Some became
churches. One sees cross-cultur-
al architectural influences in the
seemingly oddly-named Santa
Maria La Blanca and Transito
Synagogue. The former features
a main hall with ornate Islamic-
style arches; the latter houses a
Sephardic museum and still con-
tains Hebraic inscriptions in its
top cornice, contrasting with its
elegant, ornate plasterwork.
The primary among Segovia's
five synagogues became the Cor-
pus Christi Church and now is a
Franciscan nunnery. A walk
through the Jewish section, start-
ing from any of its seven pre-
served gates, also gives one the
chance to see some private hous-
es and the Jewish Pinarillo ceme-
tery. The caves within the
cemetery are thought to have
been hiding places for Jews un-
willing to give up their religion
and their homes.
Jews first came to Girona in
888. They thrived for years under
the king's protectorate. Starting
around 1200, the city became a
major center for Kabbalistic
study. As late as 1331, the
monarch set up a royal commis-
sion to punish those who vandal-
ized Jewish property. Girona
contains archives of Jewish doc-
uments in Hebrew and Catalan.
Artifacts include tombstones and
the slot in a wall that once held a
mezuzah.
In any of the cities, stone stair-
cases and arches remain that
were the daily pathways of our
ancestors as they lived within
these calls. Remnants of street
signs and other exterior symbols
of our presence are scattered
throughout.
In Barcelona, I met a woman
who traced her family from Spain
to Russia and France before re-
turning to Spain after Napoleon.
Her family names include
"Gelabert," and she believes some-
one in the distant past practiced
Judaism. My grandfather's name
was "Glebes ' until he reached El-
lis Island. A cousin perhaps? I'd
like to think so. It's one more link
to some of the brightest and dark-
est days of our history. ❑
