• er, Vienna's second major opera house. If you like horses, I strongly rec- ommend seeing the Lippizaner , stallions perform at the Spanish Riding School. The music and pageantry are exciting. The school and its many generations of trained horses have been enter- taining the public for 260 years. Walkers will enjoy a stroll through the Stadtpark, Vienna's oldest public park. Right in the heart of the city, the grass and flower-filled park has a band shell, amusement arcade and a garden cafe. The menu is in English as well as German. An interesting sight in down- town Vienna is a statue of a World War II Russian soldier and flag mounted on a soaring five-story high pillar. The statue, erected in 1945, is dedicated to "the soldiers of the Soviet Union killed in the liberation of Austria from fas- cism." The are many wonderful mu- seums in the city. There is the Natural History Museum, Mu- seum of Art History and the Mu- seum der Stadt Wien, probably the best single repository of the city's long history. An interesting trip just outside the city involves driving through the Vienna Woods. A colorful sub- urb of the city is called Grinzing, a place to go to drink wine and sing songs. ❑ Spain Reveals Sephardic Roots MARK GLASS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS My first visit to Spain included a treasure of Jewish history, in- cluding the unlikely discovery of a (possible) relative. While oppression from some Catholic monarchs in the first years of Jewish residence threat- ened our standing, Arabic in- vaders, whose first incursions were in 711, welcomed the sup- port of indigenous Jews, leading to centuries of peaceful coexis- tence. In some regions, all three cultures attained harmonious co- existence. About 15 years ago, a number of communities and universities began rediscovering and restor- ing their remnants ofJudaica. In particular, a consortium of eight cities formed to create a series of living museums to Spain's Jew- ish ancestry. I was privileged to visit three of them (Toledo, Segovia and Girona), exploring what remains of their ancient Jewish quarters. It was alternately disquieting and heartening that no Jews presently live in any of the three cities. The absence of any kins- men is an all-too-vivid testament SPAIN page 106 High-quality . article reprints can help your company in many ways: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recognizing Margaret and daughter Wendy for years of outstanding service to the State of Israel.
