Stadtstemple, which has a com-
munity center and a kosher
restaurant called Arche Noah.
Although badly damaged by
the Nazis during Kristallnacht in
1938, the synagogue is the only
house of worship in Vienna not
destroyed by the Germans. The
Nazis leveled 22 shuls and 40
small prayer houses. Other syn-
agogues open today include Agu-
das Yeshurun, Mizrachi
Synagogue and Agudas Israel.

a long Jewish history; some of it
was good, some not good at all.
When you visit the grand old
city today, you will find several
Jewish newspapers, about a
dozen synagogues, a Jewish com-
munity center, a day school, Tal-
mud Torahs, kosher cuisine and
a modern home for Jewish.senior
citizens.
These facilities serve a total
Jewish population of about 7,000
people, most of them elderly.
About 4,000 of these folks came
from the former Soviet Union.
Representing the pre-1938 gen-
eration are only about 2,000 Jews.
An important place to visit in
Vienna is the Jewish Museum. It

is interesting to note that the first
Jewish museum in the world
opened in Vienna in 1897.
Today's recently expanded and
re-opened Vienna Jewish Muse-
um contains an extensive collec-
tion ofJudaica — scrolls, ancient
texts, ritual objects, works by
Jewish authors, photos and more.
The museum is open every day
except Saturday. Adult admission
is $7; a ticket for a child is $4.
Vienna has a long tradition as
a Jewish center in Europe. It was
the home of Theodore Herzl, the
founder of Zionism; Sigmund
Freud, father of psychoanalysis
(visit his office, which is now a
museum, and see the famous
couch); Gustav Mahler, compos-
er; and Billy Wilder, film direc-
tor.
If you want to visit a synagogue
in Vienna, first call the Jewish

Not far from the former
Gestapo headquarters is the Jew-
ish Documentation Center. You
can visit the building, but you
have to make an appointment;
call 533-91-31.
Two important monuments in
the city are the Gestapo Victims
Monument in Morzinplatz and a
sculptured figure of a Jew forced
to scrub political slogans off the
street. The sculpture is located
behind the opera house.
There are many other places
to visit in this city of 1.7 million.
If you are an opera lover, you will
enjoy a performance at the State
Opera on the Ringstrasse. There
is also a tour of the landmark
building that houses the opera.
The 50-minute tour costs about
$5. State Opera tickets for good
seats go as high as $100 each.
