Helping Hearts

avid Meyers is a desper-
ate man.
His 29-year-old wife
Jane is in the hospital
again, her lungs filled with flu-
id. He has a full-time job as a
bricklayer, and there are two
children, ages 1 and 2, who need
their parents at home.

A benefit Sunday will help the Meyers
family make life more comfortable for Mom.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Hammell
Music is sponsoring a concert at
St. James Roman Catholic
Church in Novi to benefit the
Meyers family. Pianist Pierre
Fracalanza and soprano Laurie
Meeker will be joined by the

Any money raised will be used

who is getting hospice care two
hours each day.
"No matter how much money
you have with this disease, it's
not enough, especially if you
have a 1- and a 2-year-old baby,"
David Meyers said. ❑

Last year, Jane Meyers was
diagnosed with amyotrophic lat-
eral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's Dis-
ease. The terminal illness
attacks the nervous system,
eventually leaving the individ-
ual without the capacity to move
or breathe.
"Even the hospice people tell
me they've never seen anything
o like it, so quick in a woman so
= young," said David, a 1981 grad-
8
uate of Harrison High School in
52 Farmington Hills. His parents
are Carl and Diane.
As with many tragedies,
David and Jane Meyers — he is
Lij Jewish; she is Catholic — have
g encountered extraordinary kind-
ness among friends and
§ strangers.
A Northville church, Our
Lady of Victory, raised $20,000
for the family, which enabled
them to buy a house where Jane
need not climb steps and where
she can negotiate wider door-
ways.
Rabbi Sherwin Wine of Birm-
ingham Temple has counseled
the couple almost weekly, and
donated a generous sum to
the Northville Civic Concern, a
fund set up to aid the Meyers
family.
