young musicians learn about
working professionally. The reg-
ular show at 8 p.m. follows the
tradition of the big band sounds.
While the 15-piece orchestra is
steeped in the history of jazz, it
also is infused with the progres-
sive harmonies of today.
"We are pursuing jazz for the
same reasons that all jazz play-
ers do," said Maricle, who also is
the leader. 'We are drawn to it be-
cause of a passion for the music.
The issue of maleness or female-
ness isn't a consideration that
should influence the pursuit of
someone's dream."
Diva members have played
with Woody Herman, Toshiko
Akiyoshi and the Thad Jones/Mel
Lewis Orchestra. The "no man's
band" has performed in Carnegie
Hall, the Smithsonian Institution
and New York clubs such as the
Rainbow Room and Tavern on
the Green.
"I hope the young people who
hear our musicians think of them
as role models," said Kay, who
points out that Diva members
have studied at prestigious
schools including The Berklee
College of Music, The University
of North Texas and The New
England Conservatory of Music.
"I think that male musicians
who are secure in what they do
look up to them as well."
With appearances on CNN and
CBS's "Sunday Morning," Diva
has released its first CD, Some-
thing's Coming, now available on
the Perfect Sound label. El
