Passed hors d'oeuvres and din-
ner were the usual Ritz-Carlton
goodies, and the excellent music
of the Johnny Trudell Orchestra
was another unsung highlight ...
Johnny's rhythms are so good and
always taken for granted ... I've
never yet heard a below-par per-
formance by Johnny and his mer-
ry musical men.
Bob Allison, "Ask Your Neigh-
bor" radio host, blasted today's
sports to all who'd listen ... He
said that hockey, football and bas-
ketball have become horror shows
with too much violence ... But box-
ing is OK, Bob says, even when
there is bloodshed.
Hy Dorfman talks enthusias-
tically about a 1920s and 1930s
nostalgic pictorial showing of De-
troit Jewish neighborhoods that'll
be presented by Steve Rosman at
the Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center this coming Octo-
ber.

A makeover
at the Kingsley.

There were two huge screens
for folks who couldn't see the
stage ... And when Free Press
columnist Bob Talbert got up to
introduce Bruce Rosen, a quick-
as-a-wink flash of the Red Wings
game in progress came on and off
in a blink ... Bob's intro was from
the heart for his friends Bruce
and Rosalie Rosen.
It is finally told how Dr. Arthur
Victor stays so trim-looking ...
Those four or five days a week of
strenuous exercising at the Jew-
ish Community Center does it ...
When Rob Allen got up to intro-
duce Dr. Jackson, one of the gals
at our table leaned over to her
husband and asked if he was a
movie star ... Emcee Gene Taylor
made sure everyone knew what
the Red Wing score was ... at all
times ... Is it true that Bruce
Rosen had a tiny ESPN comput-
er in his pocket to keep up on the
game?
Few come any more wonderful
than Lorraine Schultz, co-chair-
person of the event with hubby
Dr. Arthur Schultz, who may be
a collector but has the best of
them all in Lorraine ... She is our
town's No. 1 volunteer ... And
what a wonderful gesture it
would be if a shindig was given
where she could come as a guest
... to a party given for her.
NOW THERE'S such a thing
as a Cigar-B-Que ... The one July
11, 6 p.m., benefiting Care House
of Macomb County, will have
Chef Jeff Baldwin doing the grill
work at Mac & Ray's in Harrison
Township ... Sights, sounds, fla-
vors and aromas of a classic sum-

mer barbecue plus jovial cama-
raderie arising from folks who en-
joy premier cigars.
IT WAS A RARE treat for
those at our table sampling the
new dishes soon to be on the menu
of Hoa Kow in Crosswinds Mall
on Orchard Lake Road ... Carolyn
and Mitchell Simmer, Bobbie and
Jerry Malin and Ellen and Leo
Goldenberg gave owner Gene Woo
their opinions of the very different
Chinese food his new chef from
Hong Kong will be presenting.
This is Hoa Kow's 42nd year ...
making it the third oldest Chinese
restaurant hereabouts ... Chung's
in downtown Detroit has been
around since the early '40s and
Pearl Gardens in Birmingham is
a year older than Hoa Kow.
HERE'S A CHANCE to help
Jewish inmates retain their reli-
gious practices ... Those in prison
need yarmulkes, prayer shawls,
prayerbooks and Chumash (soft
cover) ... Make arrangements for
pick-up or drop-off by contacting
Martin Mattes, (248) 647-3115.
IF DAD IS a golf bug, he'll
probably like being at Capital Grill
in Somerset North, West Big
Beaver, Troy, on Father's Day,
Sunday, June 15.
They'll give dining pops a corn-
plimentary pack of Top Flight golf
balls.
Capital Grill, by the way, was
recently awarded "Best of Award
of Excellence" by Wine Spectator
magazine for its wine list of over
300 selections from California,
France and Italy.
FUND-RAISER FOR Jewish
Ensemble Theatre, hosted by Big
Daddy's Parthenon on Orchard
Lake Road and the Jet Set, its vol-
unteer arm, will be at Big Daddy's,
Monday, June 30, 6:30 p.m. ... For
reservations to the dinner and en-
tertainment, call Phyllis Green at
JET, (248) 788-2900.
"EVERYTHING SEEMS so
foreign when you are traveling
abroad — especially when par-
taking in a bit of international
foodservice," says Nation's Restau-
rant News.
"The following items, culled
from the Internet, highlight the
difficulty of understanding some
menus and signage in countries
ranging from Poland to Norway to
Japan.
"On a menu in a Swiss restau-
rant: 'Our wines leave you noth-
ing to hope for.' On the menu at
a Polish hotel: 'Salad a firm's own
make; limpid red beer soup with
cheesy dumplings in the form of a
finger; roasted duck let loose; beef
rashers beaten up in the country
people's fashion.'
"At a Swiss mountain inn:
`Special today — no ice cream.'
In a Tokyo bar: 'Special cocktail
for the ladies with nuts.' At a
Norwegian cocktail lounge:
`Ladies are requested not to have
children in the bar.' In an Aca-
pulco hotel: 'The manager has
personally passed all the water
served here."' El
