15 Month CD
marks to some 150 people in
the dining room by saying, "As
\--) I drove into the kibbutz, I saw
places where I used to play in
my childhood and people with
whom I fought in the Yom Kip-
pur War."
Numerous Ramat Yochanan
members came up to Mr. Barak
to recall their old army or kib-
butz connection; he's one of
those establishment figures
who knows thousands of Is-
• raelis by name.
•
As a matter of course, Mr.
Barak received the endorse-
ment of Leah Rabin, who con-
siders him the inheritor of her
husband's mantle. At a recent
Haifa University gathering to
inaugurate the Yitzhak Rabin
Social Sciences and Mathe-
matics Complex, Mr. Barak
greeted Mr. Rabin's daughter
- Dalia Rabin-Filosof with a fa-
/—
miliar, "Ahlan," (Arabic for "hel-
lo"), and they kissed each other
on the cheek.
Asked why he supported Mr.
Barak, Haifa Mayor Amram
Mitzna — another former army
general with a niche in Labor
carved out and waiting for him
— said: "He has amazing per-
sonal capacities — brilliant

at managing large organiza-
tions. All this makes him the
right man for the job."
Mr. Barak's appeal to the
party's rank-and-file, however,
is that he looks like a winner.
/— Being a general is always a
huge plus in Israeli politics, and
it spares him from being at-
tacked as a leftist dove, which
drives masses of Israeli voters
away from Labor in every gen-
eral election.
At Kibbutz Ramat Yocha-
nan, Mr. Barak told the audi-
ence that the Labor Party has
\ come to look on Mr. Netan-
yahu's election victory "almost
deterministically. As soon as it
was known that Mr. Netan-
yahu had won, even by a hair,
then, all of a sudden, it was
predestined; the writing was on
the wall. It wasn't predestined;
it wasn't written on the wall —
it's in our hands, and we can
change it, and that's what we
\_plan to do."
' For Mr. Barak, Primary Day
will be the easy part. The hard
part will be Election Day
