fter the Labor Party's pri-
mary election there will
be for the first time since
1974 a chairman and
candidate for prime minister
whose name is neither Shimon
Peres nor Yitzhak Rabin. His
name is Ehud Barak.
Barak is the party's Great
White Hope. A recent Gallup
Poll showed Mr. Barak leading
Likud Prime Minister Binyamin
Netanyahu 45 percent to 40
percent among Jewish voters.
Israeli Arabs, who make up
about 15 percent of the elec-
torate, are expected to vote over-
whelmingly for Mr. Barak.
