restaurant would close at mid-
night and offered to have the
team party there after a win.
But he went to the winning
game Saturday still uncertain
about the team's plans. Just in
case, though, co-owner Tommy
Peristeris kept the waitstaff at
the restaurant until Mr. Rogow
called just before midnight.
"I did talk to Darren McCar-
ty on Saturday morning, and he
said, 'Nobody is talking about
what we're doing after the
game.' So as of noon Saturday I
/—
still had no idea what was going
on."
After the game, Mr. Rogow
"went downstairs to congratu-
late some of the guys. Scotty
Bowman was doing a press con-
- ference at the time; when he
was done he said, 'Come on over
here, Big Daddy!" "
"He went into the locker room
and told the team, 'We're all go-
ing to Big Daddy's Parthenon in
West Bloomfield.' "
Which sent Mr. Rogow into a
tailspin — thinking the restau-
rant might not have enough
champagne to fill the Stanley
Cup, according to tradition. "I
called my wife at home, and she
got ahold of some champagne,
cigars."
At about 1:30 a.m., the play-
ers started arriving at the
restaurant. Igor Larionov was
the first one out of his car, fol-
lowed by Slava Fetisov and
Doug Brown.
"Not only were we entertain-
ing players and their wives, [but
also] aunts, uncles, parents,
grandparents as well," Mr. Ro-
gow says. "I didn't realize it
would be this big."
Then at about 3:15, Vladimir
Konstantinov turned to Mr. Ro-
gow and said, "Where's Stevie?"
The longtime Red Wing captain,
Steve Yzerman, "was the only
one missing. Coaches, assistant
coaches were here; the only one
missing was Stevie — and of
course, the Stanley Cup, be-
cause everybody knew Stevie
/—)
had it," says Mr. Rogow
At 3:45 a.m., Steve Yzerman's
silver Porsche arrived, carrying
the captain, his wife and the
Cup.
"I've been a hockey fan since
way back, to Olympia [Stadi-
um]," Mr. Rogow says. With
WJR Radio broadcasting live
and hundreds of hockey fans
\---)
partying in the parking lot of his
/--
restaurant, he says there was
no better thrill.
"Being a hockey fan, being
friends with the guys, every-
thing all at once, and to know
the Stanley Cup hasn't been in
Detroit for 42 years, and to
know that five or six hours af-
ter it was won, it was in my
restaurant, was touching. [I got]
/---) teary-eyed."
"I asked Stevie, 'Can I touch
it?' And he said, 'Of course, Big
Daddy.' " ❑
