Older homes and furniture
built before 1978 may have paint
with high levels of lead. If you
haven't checked this out yet, con-
tact your local health department.
And if your home isn't outfitted
with a carbon monoxide detector
and the appropriate number of
smoke detectors, now is the time
to install them.
Replace old, frayed or faulty
phone cords, extension cords or
other electrical cords.
Because a curious toddler can
fall out a window in the blink of
an eye, parents should install win-
dow guards on all windows above
the ground floor.
And since warm days keep kids
outdoors, check out their favorite
play areas. Johnson recommends
putting a protective surface be-
neath play equipment to break a
child's fall. Just six inches of a
loose fill material, such as sand
or wood chips, will prevent in-
juries from falls.
Although we're 110W part of the area's largest
health system, we haven't lost sight of our
dedication to Jewish traditions. Which is why
We continue to observe religious holidays,
offer rabbinical service, as well as maintain
Sinai's kosher kitchen. What's new is the fact
that The Detroit Medical Center is expanding
these practices, especially at Huron
Valley-Sinai Hospital.

Gas Appliances
And Allergies
Asthmatics who live in a home
with gas appliances in a poorly
ventilated kitchen may be more
susceptible to allergy-induced
asthma attacks.
A study published by the
American Lung Association notes
that brief exposure to a low levels
of nitrogen dioxide, followed hours
later by inhaling pollen, raises the
chances of an allergic reaction.
The gas increases the respirato-
ry tract's sensitivity to allergens.
To prevent gas buildup in the
kitchen, the association recom-
mends having a certified techni-
cian inspect gas appliances
annually and fit them with a hood
fan to propel pollutants outside.
Always use a the fan or open a
window when cooking.

Researchers at the National
Center for Health Statistics found
that 9 percent of children under

of toddlers have iron deficiency
anemia. Up to 11 percent of ado-
lescent girls are iron deficient; so
are up to 5 percent of women. Mi-

than twice as likely as white
women to have an iron defi-

Fewer than 1 percent of teen-
