Temple Emanu-El and Shaarey Zedek nursery
schools swap staff in a personnel overhaul.
JULIE WIENER STAFF WRITER
n Monday, a longtime co-di-
rector of Temple Emanu-
El's nursery school began
her new job as assistant di-
rector of Shaarey Zedek's nursery
school.
And in the coming months, a
teacher at Shaarey Zedek's nurs-
ery school will be starting her new
job ... as associate director of Tern-
ple Emanu-El's nursery school.
In the course of two weeks, two
of the largest Jewish nursery
schools in metropolitan Detroit
announced overhauls of their ad-
ministrative staffs.
First, Janet Pont left her post
as director of the Shaarey Zedek
nursery school to become full-time
director of the Applebaum Par-
enting Center, a community pro-
gram operated under the auspices
of Shaarey Zedek. Rena Wein-
traub, who was associate director
at the nursery school, replaced Ms.
Pont.
Then Rena Cohen, co-founder
and co-director of Temple Emanu-
El's nursery school for 16 years,
announced that she would be leav-
ing in a week to work under Ms.
Weintraub at Shaarey Zedek.
In response to Ms. Cohen's
departure, Temple Emanu-El
nursery school co-director
Michaelyn Silverman reorga-
nized the staff and hired two
associate directors: Eileen
Brand and Amy Bone.
"I felt I owed it to [the par-
ents] to have a specific, firm
plan in operation by the time
we all broke [for the summer],"
said Ms. Silverman. "When you
choose a nursery school, you
want to know very concretely
that there's a very consistent,
smooth transition."
Ms. Brand, who is leaving a
teaching position at Shaarey
Zedek, will be responsible for
Shabbat programming and
music at Temple Emanu-El's
nursery school. Ms. Bone, cur-
rently a Temple Emanu-El
teacher, will be coordinating
day-to-day office operations and
scheduling
Ms. Cohen, who has been a
member of Shaarey Zedek for 29
years, is already familiar with her
new workplace and the people
there. In fact, she and Ms. Pont
have known each other since they
carpooled together when their
children were students at — you
guessed it — Shaarey Zedek's
nursery school.
"I'm looking forward to the new
challenges and the opportunity to
be in a situation that I'm very fa-
miliar with," said Ms. Cohen.
However, she added that leaving
20% off everyday 20% off everyday 20%

the temple has been difficult and
that she will miss the staff, par-
ents and children there.
Like Ms. Cohen, Ms. Brand's
move is also to, a familiar situa-
tion. Although she has been at
Shaarey Zedek for four years, Ms.
Brand worked at Temple Emanu-
El for 10 years before that and has
been a member of the congrega-
tion.
"I'm returning to friends," said
Ms. Brand. 'When I left the tem-
ple, I did not leave the people.
I'm not leaving the people of )
Shaarey Zedek either." Afterc=,
years of teaching, she said she
is looking forward to taking on
a new role and being in a posi-
tion to mentor other teachers.
"Eileen and I have known
each other professionally for
many years, and I think for
some time now, she has been
considering options in adminis-
tration," said Ms. Silverman.
She added that the changes-7)=(
were "lucky all the way around
for everybody." ❑
