must always be preceded by a
love for His creatures. Aaron, the
High Priest, who was the first to
bless our people, was the symbol
of such love. It is said of him that
he loved his fellow human beings
and sought to bring them closer
to the Torah.
What does that love mean? In
Hebrew, the word that means "to
know," yodod, also means "to
love." When we know and un-
derstand the inner life of our fel-
low man, we learn to express
affection and love.
In the authentic Jewish view,
a deep connection is formed be-
tween people only when there is
real knowledge. That kind of
knowledge means to respond to
the life of another person, to en-
ter this world, to share his joy, to
feel his pain, to react to his need.
If we don't know one another,
what passes for love will lead us
astry.
Thus does the Torah teach us
that the blessing of peace will de-
scend upon us when we respond
with our commitment, when we
engage in sincere dialogue, and
when we overcome the barriers
that divide us with the power of
love.
May God's blessing of peace be
advanced by our striving. ❑
