take these ideas
and make them

This was Gov.

of the business op-

the governor. "If people here can
only appreciate what he went
through and how he is involved
now, maybe they'd be more in-
clined to participate in our own
political process."
Gov. Engler said he was
struck by the juxtaposition of
modern Israel with its antiqui-
ties and archaeological sites. On
one hand, he said, a person is en-
tering a city such as Jerusalem
which is modern, yet it is a holy
city.
"You get a sense of awe," he said.
The governor also said he was
emotionally taken by Yad
Vashem — the Holocaust Memo-
rial Museum — and the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre. He also
visited the grave of Prime Min-
ister Yitzhak Rabin.
Gov. Engler said Michigan's
Partnership 2000 seemed much
more organized and in place than
those of other cities.
"I think it's clear we're doing
well with the partnership," he
said. 'We're so well planned here.
There's a structure in place. And
we want to see Israel represent-
ed here in Michigan, whether it's
the Society of Automotive Engi-
neers or an exchange of people
in our universities. It's a great
program we have here. I couldn't
have a better appreciation for
such a remarkable country."
