L, Presents Youth Awards

Elana Erdstein, a Berkley High
School senior, and Shari Katz, a
senior at North Farmington High
School, are the winners of the
League of Jewish Women's Or-
ganizations' 52nd annual Youth
Awards.
The young women were se-
lected from 23 area graduates
who carried a minimum of a 3.0
grade point average, had a reli-
gious education and demonstrat-
ed participation and leadership
in school, communal and Jewish
activities. The students also each
submitted an essay on, "Is There

a Place in Government for Jew-
ish Values?" and were inter-
viewed by a panel of four judges.
Ms. Erdstein is the immediate
past president of Michigan Re-
gion National Federation of Tem-
ple Youth and the originator of
Elana's Clean Up Campaign, a
bat mitzvah project that began as
a local effort to collect sample ho-
tel toiletries for distribution to
shelters, food banks and victims
of natural disasters and escalat-
ed into a program distributing
start-up kits to organizations na-
tionwide.

The Michigan/Israel Connection
is seeking teen-agers to partici-
pate in the Teen Mission 2 Israel,
July 25-30, 1998. It follows the
first teen mission in 1996. Recre-
ational activities on the mission
will include hiking, floating on the
Dead Sea, snorkeling and rappel-
ing. Visits to historical and reli-
gious sites and to the cities of Tel
Aviv and Jerusalem will introduce
teens to ancient and modern Is-
rael. A Sabbath observance with
a host teen and family, a celebra-
tion of Israel's 50th birthday and
opportunities to socialize with Is-
raeli teens are included in the
package.
Teens in grades 10-12 as of fall
1998 are eligible to participate.
A $100 deposit, fully refundable
before Nov. 1, 1997, guarantees a
spot on the mission Subsidized by
the Jewish community, the price
has been reduced to $2,995 for res-
idents of the metro Detroit Jew-
ish community.

Jewish Leader
Series Continues

"Being A Jewish Leader," an adult
Jewish learning series taught by
community educator Ruth
Bergman, is being offered at Con-
gregation B'nai Moshe on Thurs-
day mornings from 10:30 a.m. to
noon.
There are three session dates
remaining in the current eight-
part series: June 19, June 26 and
July 3. New students are welcome.
The series is co-sponsored by
B'nai Moshe and Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. Tu-
ition is $5 per session for members
of B'nai Moshe and BAHNI, $8 for
others. Each session is self-con-
tained.
On June 19, the subject will be
biblical texts about Solomon. On
June 26, the class will discuss rab-
binic attitudes towards David,
Solomon and the monarchy. On
July 3, the session will discuss
Mordechai and Esther and what
it means to be a Jewish leader in
the Diaspora.
