Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit is proud to honor The Graduating Class of 1997/5757 Jared Carl Acker ipt.4 In5p apy, Dayna Apsel While the many mitzvot of Passover and Sukkot are vital, distinctive and have much to teach, we also need a no-frills holiday like Shavuot. It reminds us that the foundation for every- thing else needs to be our continuing effort to grow in Torah learning and Jewish ob- servance. This message is all the more powerful for its starkness. Now the Bamidbar-Shavuot connection becomes truly com- pelling. It is not coincidental that the Jewish calendar has been arranged so that Bamidbar is al- ways read on the Shabbat before Shavuot. The tabernacle at the center of the machenah can be understood as a permanent sub- stitute for the interaction with God experienced at the revela- tion at Mt. Sinai. Just as they surrounded the mountain, longing for closeness to God, the Jews would encamp around the tabernacle, symbol- izing that their very existence was predicated on their closeness to Torah. Today, we lack even the sub- stitute. The tabernacle, like the revelation before it, has receded into history. Will our generation rise to the challenge presented to us? What will we put at the cen- ter of our camps? We need to fill the void with the mikadshei me'at, the "small sanctuaries" — our synagogues, Jewish schools and Jewish insti- tutions. We need to remember, as our ancestors before us, the im- portance of our family history and knowing from where we come. When it comes to our Jewish identity and practice, it's time to follow the example set for us so many centuries ago by Bamidbar and Shavuot: Stand up and be counted! ❑ /- \ /— Shavuot Classes At Or Chadash Congregation Or Chadash will hold three consecutive text ses- sions on the afternoon of the first day of Shavuot, Wednesday, June 11. Ed Codish will discuss his essay, 'The Shat- tered Tablets of the Law." Su- sann Codish, the president of Or Chadash, will speak about the Ten Commandments. The text study sessions will be held at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m., at 13661 Ludlow, Oak Park. Each session will last about 45 minutes. Refreshments will be served between sessions. The public is invited. The sessions will conclude with Mincha services at 7 p.m. There is no charge. Natalie Eva Baum wria ntn Rachel F. Beider 11 ,,a 5n1 Pamela L. Bogorad 111)12 Scott L.
