cent growth in the community is
straining the capacity of the cur-
rent building, a former elemen-
tary school located on six acres of
land on Arm Arbor's Birch Hollow
Drive.
When the center was founded,
there were 1,200 known Jewish
households in Washtenaw Coun-
ty. Now, the Jewish population is
estimated at 2,700 families, not
including University of Michigan
and Eastern Michigan Universi-
ty students.
The 142-student preschool has
a wait list of 24 children. Accord-
ing to preschool director Noreen
DeYoung, parents who wish to en-
roll their children in full-time care
generally have to wait a year.
"We know the expansion will
enable us to do more in the way of
programming," said Ms. Margo-
lis. The $1.5 million expansion—
begun on May 18 and funded with
a combination of foundation and
individual gifts — will add 13,000
square feet to the center's current
building. Renovations will include
additional classroom space for the
preschool and Hebrew Day School,
as well as office space for the cen-
ter and organizations it houses.
Completion is scheduled for
March 1998. ❑

old all right — at least a year,"
said Mr. Velick, who's worked for
the Henry Ford Health System
for 30 years and has been a Men
Who Cook contender five times.
And did a woman play any
part in this award-winning
recipe?
Deborah Velick, his wife, said
she came up with the recipe after
dining at Morels in Bingham
Farms. "They have such a won-
derful mushroom soup there," she
said. "So, I said, 'I'll try this.' I
added this and that, this and that,
and hey, there you go."
Dr. Rosenblum's wife also
played a major part in his contri-
bution — cornbread casserole.
"It's my wife Pamela's recipe. A
generation to generation kind of
thing," said the 53-year-old doc-
tor and father of two. 'We even
harvested the corn from our own
back yard," he laughed. "Actual-
ly, I put it together and she baked
it, because I was in the operating
room."
