fifth-graders from Hillel
Day School and Schultz
Elementary School in De-
troit stepped back in time
last week.
On a joint field trip to the De-
troit Historical Museum, the
children walked down the mu-
seum's re-created cobblestone
streets of Old Detroit, learning
what life used to be like in the
city.
They also learned a little
about each other. Under the aus-
pices of the nine-year-old Open
Arms/Open Minds program, in
which Hillel fifth-graders par-
ticipate in a year-long exchange
program with Detroit Public

Schools' fifth-graders, students
have been paired with pen pals
since September.
But the museum tour —
which stressed African-Ameri-
can and Jewish contributions to
Detroit history — was the first
opportunity for the pen pals to
meet face-to-face.
The purpose of the program
is for the kids "to see each other
as individuals and share com-
mon background experiences,"
said Shoshana Goldschlag, a
fifth-grade teacher at Hillel.
Eighty-two children from each
school participated.
In the past, the year's activi-
ties have included visits to each

school, but this year the muse-
um meeting was the first and
last time the children got to
meet in person.
"It's nice to meet, but sad
knowing we might not meet
again," said Hillel student Lind-

sey Moskowitz. But her pen pal
from Schultz, Danielle White-
side, was more optimistic.
"Maybe we can get each other's
phone numbers and go over to
each other's houses now," she
suggested.
