Jewish Federation Apartments overcomes one more
obstacle in its attempts to build two new apartment
complexes.

t Monday's board meet-
ing in West Bloomfield
Township, Jewish Feder-
ation Apartments moved
one step closer to building
twin apartment complexes on
the Jewish Community Cam-
pus.
By a 5-2 vote, the township's
board of trustees introduced an
amendment that would change
the zoning criteria for senior cit-
izen housing, allowing more
units to be built per acre.
Trustees Sharon Law and
Denise Hammond did not sup-
port the introduction of the pro-
posal.
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments, which operates five
other facilities in West Bloom-
field and Oak Park, plans to
build two 100-unit "congregate
living' complexes to fill a press-
ing need, said JFA Executive Di-
rector Marsha Goldsmith
Kamin. She said there are wait-

ing lists for all of the facilities,
four of which are subsidized by
HUD.
The next step toward the pro-
ject is a public hearing and
approval of the proposed amend-
ment change. Township trustees
will take up the issue at their
June 16 meeting. They could ei-
ther adopt the amendment then
or postpone a vote if there is
public opposition.

The process of putting up the
buildings has been long and
frustrating. Last year, West
Bloomfield's planning commis-
sion recommended that the
board of trustees approve the
amendment change. But the is-
sue was subsequently tabled
