Jewry's Role in
Human Advancement

Jewish researchers have been endlessly attracted to the
life sciences and the challenge of probing for the reasons
we are what we are--the miracle that lives in every living
being. Here we honor a native Russian, German and
American seeker for such knowledge, and whose quests
were rewarded by Nobel Prizes.

ELIE METCHNIKOFF
(1845-1916) b. Ivanovka, Russia
Biologist Not until escaping Czarist
oppression to join Louis Pasteur in
Paris in 1988 did his brilliance as an
embryologist and immunologist re-
ceive world attention. While a pro-
fessor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the
University of Odessa, he had discovered that certain
white blood cells he named "phagocytes" could ingest
and destroy harmful foreign particles such as bacteria.
After his appointment as subdirector of the Pasteur
Institute, he further observed that lactic-acid bacteria in
the digestive system could help extend hurnan life. For
the biological significance of this landmark study he
shared the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine
with Paul Ehrlich.

OTTO LOEWI
(1873-1961) b. Frankfort, Germany
Pharmacologist In early career, the
professor of pharmacology at Aus-
tria's University of Graz studied the
responses of the heart, kidneys and
- nervous system to chemical and elec-
trical stimulation. Consequently, he and associate Sir
Henry Dale learned how nerve impulses are transmitted
by chemical "messengers"--findings which earned them
Nobel Prizes for Physiology and Medicine in 1936. At
the Nazi takeover of Austria two years later, he was
briefly imprisoned, stripped of all belongings and de-
ported to England. On resettling in the U.S. in 1940 he
became a research professor at the New York College of
Medicine. Among his other contributions to advanced
medical therapy was the Loewi test for pancreatic insuffi-
ciency.

JOSHUA LEDERBERG
(1925- ) b. Montclair, New Jersey
Geneticist He helped pioneer the
field of bacterial genetics with co-
authored reports of several far-reach-
ing discoveries. Proof was offered
that "sexual" exchanges between dif-

ferent strains of bacteria could recombine their respective
genes to produce entirely new, crossbred species. And,
a process called "transduction" allows certain viruses to
transfer genes from one bacterium to another. Through
such manipulations and his ingenious bacterial breeding
techniques, science has learned much about how genes
function in human heredity. His 1958 Nobel Prize for
Physiology or Medicine was shared with two other
American geneticists, and he was elected president of
New York City's Rockefeller University in 1978.
