The University of Michigan's
Bentley Historical Library has ac-
quired the papers of Bernard
Isaacs (1882-1975), the first su-
perintendent of United Hebrew
Schools of Detroit.

Bernard Isaacs

Mr. Isaacs emigrated to the
United States from Russia in
1904. Trained as an engineer, he
became superintendent of the He-
brew school system in Inch-
anapolis in 1914.
He was picked to lead the new
UHS in Detroit in 1919 and re-
mained its superintendent until
he retired in 1955. He also au-
thored several Hebrew volumes
of short stories that were trans-
lated into Yiddish and English.
He died in 1975 at age 93.

Detroiter Joel E. Jacob has been
named co-chair of the U.S. row-
ing team that will compete in July
in the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Jacob was a varsity rower at
Michigan State University and
chaired the 1993 U.S. Maccabiah
team.

The Detroit Maccabi Club is seek-
ing additional baseball and ten-
nis players for the regional
Maccabi Youth Games to be held
in Milwaukee Aug. 10-15.
The Maccabi baseball team is
seeking 15-16-year-old boys. The
tennis team needs boys and girls
age 13-16.
