usual evening [bar/bat mitzvah]
party," but Mrs. Koenig says the
shared celebration was "really for
the child — it's not a '60s band or
dancing party; it's games."
In the past, when seventh-
grade classes at Hillel hovered
near 35 students, the celebrants
were strongly encouraged to
invite all classmates. But due
to expanded enrollment, the
school's policy has changed.
Now, the seventh-graders are
placed in random groupings and
asked to invite all children in
their group. Many students still
invite the entire class.
'When you have 70 kids in a
grade," says David Feldman's
mother, Daphna, "by party No.
25, the kids already have had
enough. There's only so much you
can do to entertain them, and it
comes to a point where you re-
ally feel that a few kids need to
get together. I would like to see

many more, more than three, like
10 together ... there's no need in
having 70 bar mitzvah parties."
Says Michael Koenig, 'We're
all kind of sick of the dance par-
ties, and we wanted to do some-
thing different. With three
people, it would be three times
better than with one, and it was.
"Everyone helped, and every-
one contributed their ideas, so
we knew what girls would want
and we knew what boys would
want. We had both sexes in-
cluded in the party, so we tried
to make it fun for everyone,"
Michael says.
Hillel provides a booklet
called, "At 13, The Mitzvot." It
discourages parties that "take on
an overtly secular theme and en-
courages themes having to do
with tzedakah (sacred giving)
andg'milut hasadim (acts oflov-
ingkindness)."
The Hillel parents say they do
not feel pressure to throw ex-
travagant parties, although they
acknowledge that competition
does exist in some circles.
Hannah liked that she could
have more games at her party.
But she also says sharing her
party created a sense of commu-
nity among the kids. The three
celebrants became "better friends
because we shared something
like that." ❑
