to link the island to the mainland, as surface connections are noto- riously costly and bad for the en- vironment. Mr. Marom's plan is the only one presently available. No one denies the need to move Sde Dov. In fact, with every year that passes, that need becomes more compelling. Initially, the airport stood apart from the city. Today, Tel Aviv lux- ury neighborhoods crowd the air- port perimeter. For residents like Shiri Mey- er who live in these expensive neighborhoods, the airport means noise and pollution. According to Mr. Marom, the airport also brings danger. "Almost 85 percent of aircraft accidents occur during the min- utes immediately after takeoff or before landing. If even a small plane hit one of the new buildings, the casualties could be enormous," says Mr. Marom. "Sde Dov is dan- gerous compared to an offshore airPort." Others disagree. "It's definite- ly not dangerous," says one offi- cial. "It's a city airport like La Guardia or Heathrow. It's just 0, 6 .0 to 0 0 0,0 6 2 6 A PY APY 4. Earn 6.00% APY on our 21 month CD. The airport was built years ago when no one lived in this area. The land pro- gram is only 10 to 12 years old. When people moved in they knew exactly where they were going to live, but they came anyway. No one can say they didn't know the airport existed or that promises were made to close it. You can't close a military airport." But the airport needs more space. It is short of parking space for the planes and does not have enough terminals. It is also re- stricted to handling small and medium-sized aircraft. All these problems aside, there is another more powerful reason why the airport must be moved — money. Sde Dov sits on the most expensive real estate in Is- rael, estimated to be worth $1.5- 2 billion. Two thousand landowners are running out of patience. 0 (c) Jerusalem Post 1997 Custom Shirts & Accessories At Discointed Prices Men's Fashion Coordinator & Shirt Designer For 20 Years *0-1235 • Wall Units • Marble • Home Office • Chairs • Bedrooms • & More Buy Factory Direct! \S Factory Showroom 1950 S.
