as a homeowner is your doors
and your locks. You can have the
most beautiful and expensive
house, but a lot of builders use
cheap locks and doors and hard-
ware unless you tell the builder
you want good locks and doors.
Then you can have the best locks
in the world.
"But if your frames aren't
reinforced with wood or some-
thing ..."
So even in this ever more
high-tech world we live in, some
things remain constant and
some things are forever en-
twined. Two of them are security
and common sense.
"Have alarms and don't keep
money in the store at night," Mr.
Efros said. "That's all there is.
There's nothing much more you
can do."

PAUL HARRIS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
W
hen you hear abou
a business called the
Spy Shack, the first
thought that crosses
your mind is of mysterious look,
ing individuals wearing trench-
coats and scurrying in and out
while giving passwords.
But things are very much
above board at the Southfield
store which specializes in elec-
tronic surveillance equipment.
Co-owners Roger Felsner and
Rudy Bogatay have been in
business on Southfield Road,
three blocks south of 11 Mile
Road, for a little over three years.
Their customers include busi-
ness owners and homeowners
who want to protect their assets
and property.
And since they specialize in
video surveillance, they also ad-
vise their customers on the right
type of system. But Mr. Felsner
says it's really not worth it if you
don't buy quality equipment.
"Good video does its job," said
Mr. Felsner. "You can go out and
buy something cheaper than we
have but it won't be the quality
that you need."
He provides his own evidence
by telling about a dissatisfied
customer who threw a brick
through the Spy Shack's glass
door. He was caught on video
and was arrested.
Much of the equipment avail-
able at the Spy Shack is for
business owners to observe em-
ployees, who — according to the
law must be made aware that
they're being observed by a video
camera, listened to with hidden
microphones or are having their
phone calls monitored.
"A lot of owners don't under-
stand that they have internal
theft," said Mr. Felsner. "You can
have a family business or have
close friends working for you, but
facts are facts. You're going to
have thievery. And if you don't
think so, you're naive."
For retail businesses, Mr. Fel-
sner recommends an alarm
system and a little hidden
medallion worn by anyone work-
ing at the counter. The medal-
lion triggers a silent alarm.
He also suggests having two
doors, which would form an al-
cove, making it necessary to buzz
people in through the inside door
and out through the outside
door. That way, if a robbery was
committed and the burglar ran
to the door, he would be trapped
in the alcove until the police ar-
rive.
"It costs money, but what
doesn't today," Mr. Felsner said.
"Nowadays, criminals don't care.
They think nothing about corn-
ing in and shooting you." ❑
