finished with a 54-107 record, the
worst in the majors that year.
Looking at it in that context,
Bautista's 6-15 won-loss record
with a 4.30 earned-run average
wasn't so bad.
Many Tiger fans remember
Bautista for the shoulder-length
hair he had in those days. But he
was up and down from the Ori-
oles to the minors the next three
seasons before being signed as
a free agent by the Kansas City
Royals in December, 1991.
After splitting the 1992 season
between Omaha and Memphis
in the Royals' organization,
Bautista was signed by the Cubs.
That led to two solid seasons
as a Chicago relief pitcher. In
1993, he was 10-3 and had a 2.58
ERA in 58 games and 111.2 in-
nings pitched. He followed that
with a 4-5 record and a 3.89 ERA
in 58 games and 69.1 innings in
the strike-shortened 1994 season.
In April, 1995, he was signed
by the Giants and spent the en-
tire season with San Francisco.
He split last season between the
Giants and their Triple-A affili-

ate in Phoenix.
The Tigers signed him last
January as a minor-league free
agent.
As of May 18, he had pitched
16.2 innings in seven games, had
an 0-1 record and a 5.40 ERA.
Bautista selected Southfield as
his Detroit-area residence but
hasn't yet had the chance to meet
with anyone from the local Jew-
ish community. But he wants to
do so, particularly with children.
'We're going to try and get in-
volved with (Tigers) public rela-
tions and try to talk to them,"
Bautista said. "I want to be in-
volved and help out and talk to
Jewish kids. I did it in Chicago
when I played there and I did it
in San Francisco when I played
out there."
Bautista tries not to let the
travel of major league baseball
interfere with the Jewish holi-
days. But if necessary, he will do
some ceremonies over the tele-
phone with his family.
That's the only time, however,
that Bautista phones in his reli-
gion. ❑
