SUMMER
PLEASURES

Bold Colors
For Kids

CARON GOLDEN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Put away the parkas, pack up the
fleece.
It's summer - time for kids to
lighten up in the clothing de-
partment.
Not sure about what outfits
will entice your children to jump
out of bed and get dressed in the
morning?
Here's what retailers and man-
ufacturers have in store for you.
Kim Himstreet of Neiman
Marcus in San Diego says that
the common theme among chil-
dren's fashions this summer is a
more Sophisticated and adult
look.
Boys, she says, are wearing
ties, and girls are dressing with-
out the layers of petticoats and
frills that have dominated previ-
ous seasons.
You'll find that at The Chil-
dren's Place as well. For girls,
there's even a "Marilyn" dress
(yep, named after the very one).
It's gingham and belted at the
waist.
Indeed, the emphasis this sea-
son seems to be on textures.
Gingham is strong, as are puck-
ers, pointelles and seersuckers.
And the colors are eye-popping:
fuchsia instead of dusty pink and
a bold, hot orange.

BOYS
If he's going to dress up, con-
sider:
• Point and banded collars.
• Sweater vests.
• Yarn-dyed shirts.
• Basic pleated chinos.
Linen is the fabric of the sea-
son, Himstreet stresses, in natu-
rals and navy.
For active wear, look for:
• Neon colors, such as lime
green and orange.
• Color blocking and racing
stripes, all in bright colors.
• Soccer or basketball styles in
high-tech fabrics.
Logos, labels and patches are
everywhere - in rubber, plastic or
embroidery.

GIRLS
Spring fashion for girls lifts off
with Easter dresses. Combine
comfort and style with sheer lay-

ered fabrics, a cleaner line sans
petticoats and slightly muted col-
ors like celadon and lavender for
dressing up. You'll find lots of
long to midcalf dresses and long
floral skirts. Top them with a
cropped cardigan.
For a casual, active outfit go-
ing into summer, look for:
Lots of crinkle and textured
fabrics - and more "techno-fab-
rics."
• Citrus colors - fun lime, tan-
gerine, lemon yellow - and flow-
ers - wisteria, azalea, and
hibiscus.
• Gingham accented with
large florals.
For smaller girls, you'll enjoy
yam-dyed plaid overalls and pin-
tucked dresses.
Skorts (shorts with a skirt
front) remain a popular item for
play.

BABIES
Even babies this summer get
a lot of bold, fun colors.
Infant girls will look adorable
in swing tops and bike shorts. Or
dress her up in a honeycomb
white pique dress with gingham
pockets. There are denim dress-
es with white bloomers and tiny
cropped white sweaters with
heart-shape buttons.
The littlest boys will sport
navy-blue and white plaid over-
alls with plaid-collared polo
shirts. White cardigans come
hooded, covering woven or pique
polo shirts and chinos. For an al-
ternative look, pick up embroi-
dered overalls. El
