in ten weathered finishes. Chair shown
launching the Philip B. Hair
Care line in 1992. He believes
that using fresh, natural ingre-
dients completely transforms
any beauty ritual.
"Using fresh, rich av-
ocados, tangy citrus
fruits and luscious
squash and melons
makes the application
of a beauty product so
much more exciting,"
he writes. "Blending
raw foods together
and applying them on
hair, skin, nails and ;
hands takes cosmet-
ics to a new sensory height."
Just like cooking your own
food allows you to control what
you eat, mixing your own potions
lets you control what you put on
your skin and hair. But before
you start chopping, boiling and
blending, B. offers a few tips:
• Always use fresh herbs.
• Thoroughly clean and wash
any produce to remove chemi-
cals from commercially grown
fruits and vegetables. Use or-
ganically grown produce when-
ever possible.
• Use alcohol-free extracts if
you can find them.
B. also recommends doing
a patch test before using any
home-brewed beauty potion.
Apply a small amount of the
recipe on the inside of your arm
and wait 24 hours. If there is no
reaction, B. says, it's probably
safe to proceed with the treat-
ment.
Finally, remember that
homemade cosmetics lack the
stabilizers found in even the
most wholesome commercial
brands and therefore have a
very short shelf life. Prop-
erly stored, B.'s recipes last
five days at most. Since
these recipes yield more
than you're likely to use
in such a short time,
share your creation with
a friend.
