Initially, membership in El-
derhostel was limited to those 60
and over. In 1995, citing earlier
retirement, semiretirement and
corporate downsizing, Elderhos-
tel lowered its minimum age to
55. Spouses can be of any age.
Companions must be at least 50
with one exception: Since the
mid-1980s, intergenerational
programs have welcomed grand-
children.
Elderhostling can become ad-
dictive. Sue and Richard Wulf of
Rydal, Pennsylvania for in-
stance, estimate that they have
attended 25 programs in 10
years. One of my classmates at
Stratford spent virtually all of
her time traveling from one El-
derhostel to another. "Its' a lot
more interesting and a lot cheap-
er," she said, "than being holed
up in a apartment." Dorothy
McAlpin, 66, of Clarinda, Iowa,
a correctional officer in a men's
prison, attended 45 Elderhostels
in 52 weeks, traveling 20,000
miles in a secondhand Win-
nebago. She visited northern
states in warm weather and
southern states when it turned
cold, making brief returns to
Iowa only for special occasions.
Mildred Hyman, author of El-
derhostels: The Students' Choice,
a grading of facilities and in-
structors in 34 states and 14
countries (including Israel), be-
lieves that a "social stratification"
stems from "the number of hos-
tels attended.
However, it is the total ab-
sence of class distinctions she ex-
perienced at 51 Elderhostels that
intrigues Barbara Ranucci of
Deming, N.M.: "I have met peo-
ple who never finished grammar
school and some with as many
as five advanced degrees. White,
black, brown and yellow ... blue
collar, white collar and no collar
at all."
The participants at Jewish in-
stitutions are usually Jewish, but
not always. A friend who at-
tended an Elderhostel at the
University of Judaism in Santa
Monica, Calif, recalls a non-Jew-
ish couple who wanted to know
more about their new Jewish
son-in-law's religion.
What all Elderhostels share is
a yearning for learning. I'd urge
anyone who qualifies to sign up.

For those unable to afford even
the modest fees, Elderhostel of-
fers a limited number of U.S.-
only scholarships dubbed
"hostelships."
