By 1980, Elderhostel existed
in all 50 states and in many
Canadian provinces. The follow-
ing year, Elderhostel offered its
first programs abroad, in Great
Britain and Scandinavia, sup-
plementing academic venues
with other kinds of cultural in-
stitutions. International pro-
grams are four weeks in length,
with weeklong stays at different
institutions that are sometimes
in different countries. Airfare
and the cost of overseas land
travel are included in the fee.
Elderhostel is
worldwide.
There are challenging possi-
bilities for hale-and-hearty se-
niors: rafting, wilderness
canoeing and a weeklong camp-
ing trip that guarantees "mid-
week shower facilities." The
international programs are even
more demanding: trekking
through Nepal; bicycling in Eng-
land, Austria, Denmark and the
Netherlands, barging down
French canals; and going on sa-
fari in Kenya. Elders can also live
with families in England, Ire-
land, France, Mexico, Germany,
Switzerland, New Zealand and
India. "Vildng Exploration" pro-
vides 13 days aboard a ship that
embarks from Reykjavik, Ice-
land. There are even 15-day
Antarctic expeditions aboard
oceanographic research vessels
owned by the Russian Academy
of Sciences. In the works are a
walking trip through Europe,
like the treks that originally in-
spired Martin Knowlton.
In 1992, in cooperation with
organizations like Global Vol-
unteers, Heifer Project Interna-
tional and Habitat for Humanity,
Elderhostel added service pro-
grams: teaching English in In-
donesia, Poland and Jamaica;
helping construct affordable
housing in Guatemala and in the
United States; assisting with ar-
chaeological digs in Belize; plant-
ing in Arizona or banding birds
in Texas. Hostelers who help
handicapped children between
the ages of 6 and 16 are based at
movie star Paul Newman's Dou-
ble "H" Hole in the Woods Ranch
near Glens Falls, N.Y.
