"Simcha: What's gong on here?
A wedding? A bar/bat mitzvah?
Who cares? We've got the music!
Freylachs shers, kazatskis and
much more. Between songs we'll
schmooze about history, Yid-
dishkeit, the whole megillah."
Sometimes, attention-grab-
bing titles segue into ultraseri-
ous subjects, such as "God at the
Movies": the films Oh, God! I and
II (with George Burns) and The
Quarrel (written by Chaim
Grade) are examples. "Who is
God? What does God want from
us? Why is there a lack of spiri-
tuality in contemporary society?'
Or "If You're Not Worried About
Ethics, You Ain't Got None!: Dis-
cuss Jewish ethical dilemmas
and how they pertain to individ-
ual responsibilities."
Numerous Elderhostel cours-
es deal with biblical topics. Those
that trace Christianity's Jewish
roots or compare and contrast
theologies are often offered by
Protestant institutions.
Frequent Jewish themes in-
clude shtetl life, immigration and
the Diaspora. Courses are de-
voted to Jewish communities in
cities like San Francisco, Sa-
vannah and Hong Kong and
countries such as China, India,
Japan, Zimbabwe, South Africa,
New Zealand, Brazil, Chile,
Spain, Turkey, Finland, Sweden,
Denmark, Norway and the
Netherlands.
"Pioneer Jews: How They
Helped With the West," con-
ducted on a ranch by the Uni-
versity of Arizona, promises
horses and "fireside" tales about
"Jewish cowboys, Jewish out-
laws, heroes and heroines and
even a Jewish ghost!"
One course is devoted to "se-
cret" Jews in the Southwest
whose "post-conversion" religious
practices still prevail in New Mex-
ico. More common subjects in-
clude Jewish music and
music-makers, Hollywood movie
moguls, radio pioneers, song and
dance.
"Movement and Meditation, a
Dance Workshop for Non-
Dancers" offers expert guidance
as fingers, arms and feet enable
the novice to stretch the inner
self Learn from Kabbalah and
Chasidism about the body's af-
fect on the elevation of the soul."
There are chroniclings of Jew-
ish history, the Holocaust, the
tenets of Judaism, denomina-
tional differences, Zionism, Israel,
archaeology, the Hebrew alpha-
bet, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish
leaders, great thinkers, the "Jew-
