For current baseball action, star-
ring the Toronto Blue Jays, head
back to the mainland to the im-
posing Skydome, with its 31-sto-
ry-high retractable dome and al
field so large it could hold a 32-
home subdivision. Be sure to
check out Cyndi Lauper's tiny
dress, Michael Jackson's sky-
blue shoes and other memora-
bilia in the Hard Rock Cafe
overlooking the stadium.
Several blocks away, at the
corner of Yonge Street and
Front, the Hockey Hall of Fame
is scoring big with visitors,
whether they're hockey fans or
not. With its entrance located in-
side BCE Place, a vast office mall
enclosed by vaulted glass cathe-
dral ceilings and chrome (and
housing Marche, a colorful,
moveable feast-style eatery), this
hands-on museum is a noisy, en-
thusiastic tribute to Canada's
obsession, hockey.
Everything you ever wanted
to know about hockey history,
players and gear is here, down
to the last bit of tape in the Mon-
treal Canadiens' dressing room,
a reproduction so accurate it al-
most smells of the team. Best
bet is to arrive early, before
hordes of schoolchildren, to shoot
pucks and pretend you're a
goalie in the Rink Zone, or try
your skill as a play-by-play an-
nouncer in a makeshift broad-
cast booth.
You even can touch the Stan-
ley Cup — or have your picture
taken next to it — in the covet-
ed trophy's place of honor in the
museum's Great Hall. The
shrine-like setting, reverential-
ly quiet, was the main room of a
century-old bank building. Fit-
tingly in hockey circles, the room
is capped by a 45-foot-high
stained-glass dome.
Just another unique experi-
ence to add to visitors' special
Toronto memories.
