Colorful blankets and sand castles-in-progress dot the beach. Up on Queen Street East, old- fashioned red streetcars clickety- clack as tourists weave their way around armies of young parents pushing baby strollers. Trendy shops dispense beach togs, skateboards and sunglass- es. Cafes with names like The Lion on the Beach and For Crepes Sake evoke images of your basic California beach town. "What's nice about The Beaches is that there's a huge playground area for kids if one of you wants to take off and shop," Paula Mardit says. Whether at The Beaches or back downtown, Toronto's wa- terfront is inviting. A Har- bourfront boat tour is a pleasant way to see the city's skyline, with its mix of gleaming skyscrapers and stately office buildings. One of them, the 55-story Royal Bank Tower glistens with real gold. The building's 14,000 windows are coated with 2,500 ounces of gold dust which act as an insulator, reducing heating and cooling costs. Another option is to catch one of the ferries that cruise Lake On- tario daily to the Toronto Islands, a cluster of 14 small, forested isles in Toronto Harbour. Docked at the foot of Bay Street, the ferries are jammed on summer weekends with teens, lovers and families _\ lugging picnic baskets, coolers, bicycles, rollerblades and Walk- mans for a romp on the island parkland, just a 20-minute es- cape from downtown. Daytrippers stroll the board- walk and paths; pausing to toss Frisbees, skip stones along a drift- wood-strewn beach or watch the bobbing boats, wheeling seagulls* and toddlers playing on swings.
