A New Dimension
An Israeli multimedia pioneer aims to bring
interactive video to the masses with just
one click of the mouse.
NICKY BLACKBURN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
liahu Efrat, vice-president
of Ephyx Technologies
Inc., clicked his. mouse over
the moving image of a
church on a digital video of
Jerusalem's skyline. Another
video appeared on his comput-
er, this time of the church's in-
terior.
The sound of hymns filled the
air. He clicked again on a nun
standing near the altar and a lit-
tle tag appeared beside her. Sis-
ter Mary, it read. Efrat laughed
enthusiastically. "You see, it's so
easy," he said. "You can go from
link to link."
While identifying a nun may
not sound like the road to com-
mercial success, there can be lit-
tle doubt that Ephyx — a
start-up based in Herzliya Pitu-
ah, Israel — has an exciting and
unique technology to offer. Up
until now, digital video, which
made its first appearance at the
start of the '90s, has been a pas-
sive, watch-only affair. The few
E
interactive videos available tend-
ed to be for arcade games and
these were prohibitively expen-
sive and labor-intensive.
Now, however, Ephyx has cre-
ated a quick and easy-to-use
software that promises to revo-
lutionize the world of interactive
video, making it available for
mass use for the first time.
"We are taking video into a
new dimension," said Mr. Efrat.
"We have the ability to become
the de facto standard in the in-
teractive video market."
Interactive video applies the
same principles as surfing on the
Internet, but instead of clicking
on a word and jumping to an-
other text file, it enables the user
to jump or hyperlink to another
video/image/sound/text file or
Web site. Imagine watching a
video sequence of a mountain
biker riding a trail; the end user
can click on a "hotspot" (a pre-
defined object), such as the bike,
and immediately link to a text
