"It's a form of analysis," says the 35- year-old securities analyst. It tells you where they really come from. The name Carasso, for ex- ample, is derived from carassim, the acacia boards used in the portable tabernacle carried by the Israelites in the desert. In fact, says Mr. Carasso, black crocheted kippah perched firmly on his head, his decision to become an observant Jew and make aliyah is similar to his work as a securities analyst. "I concluded from analyzing the Torah that it was a divine doc- ument with enough solid proofs that I couldn't escape its con- clusion." Analysis is second nature to Dan Carasso. Recently named Israel's top securities analyst by Institutional Investor in its an- nual awards for outstanding stockbrokerage analysts, the bearded New York native is the sole representative for the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) in Israel. Mr. Carasso made aliyah in January 1993 with his wife Judie, then pregnant with their first child. He spent his first six months learning at a Jerusalem yeshiva and then began work- ing with the Israeli office of Furman Selz Inc., the Chicago- based investment firm. By the summer of 1995, UBS had recruited Mr. Carasso and he set up shop near his home outside Jerusalem. Mr. Carasso claims that UBS's emerging-markets group is a step ahead of other Euro- pean investment firms since it offers a comprehensive plan that includes sales, research and trading under one umbrella. Within the UBS emerging-mar- kets group, which focuses on 10 countries including Israel, Turkey and Portugal, Israel is a significant percentage of its sales, says Mr. Carasso. Mr. Carasso names invest- ment firms Barings PLC, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, Oppen- (
