The Poet
Of Silence

Mr. Ben-Yitzhak, the "poet of
silence," who wrote in Hebrew,
published only 12 poems in a
troubled, erratic career.
He was born in Galacia, but
wandered Europe; at times, he
lived and worked in Berlin, Vi-
enna, Lvov, London and
Jerusalem. He hung out at
cafes with the likes of writer
James Joyce and composer
Arnold Schoenberg, but he
seemed to do more brooding
than writing. There is a hint of
chronic depression in his biog-
raphy, an affliction that appar-
ently sapped his creativity.
He wrote no more after 1930;
he died of tuberculosis in 1949
in the newly established State
of Israel.
Becaus€ of his paltry literary
output, Ben-Yitzhak should be
unknown to all but a handful of
scholarly specialists. But then
along came Wayne Myers and
the World Wide Web.
Mr. Myers, a 25-year-old He-
brew-speaking writer living in
London, has translated all of
Mr. Ben-Yitzhak's poems and
put them on his Web site. Click
on a title, and the poem is laid
out on your screen:
I didn't know my own soul,
And my soul had its fill of
silence,
Look, the wings of my spirit
are trembling ...
