feel like you're in the boondocks.
The whole community doesn't
shut down on Shabbos and
Yomtov."
Before he found a walking part-
ner in Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov, Mr.
Cherrin fi-equently davened at the
Fleischman Residence, a mile
from home. "The unknown gem
of West Bloomfield" is Fleischman,
he says, where Rabbi Avi Shapiro
leads the Orthodox minyan. It is
never full but always welcoming
— even on High Holidays, he says.
Once, Mr. Cherrin and a friend
from New York, Eddie Karan,
were asked to leave Ohel Moed to
make a minyan at YIWB. From
the large observant community in
Riverdale, N.Y., Mr. Karan was
surprised that two shuls in the
same half-mile radius would com-
pete for minyanim.
"In my shul, there are three
large minyans in one building ...
We were trying to figure out why,
to the extent that you have two
struggling congregations," they
remain separate, he says.
Part of the problem is that the
Young Israel crowd does not ap-
parently want a rabbi, whereas
Ohel Moed's congregants enjoy
Rabbi Jundefs lead. Ohel Moed
does not have a board, Mr. Cher-
rin says; the rabbi calls all the
shots.
Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov moved
to West Bloomfield more than two
years ago for the same reason
Rabbi Silberberg came. Also affil-
iated with the Lubavitch move-
ment, Rabbi Shemtov "was
looking to move out further to
start sort of a new community, to
be there for those who are not af-
filiated with any synagogues."
A growing
observant
community in
West Bloomfield.
He also wanted to live close to
the property of the future Cam-
pus of Living Judaism, west of
the Jewish Community Campus
at Maple and Drake roads. That
will be the first four-year Jewish
college in the state of Michigan,
run by the Lubavitchers. By next
year, Rabbi Shemtov is hoping to
hold a minyan in the campus
shul. Construction of buildings
and a synagogue is being
planned.
A two-year-old eruv exists only
west of Orchard Lake Road, pre-
venting people from carrying or
pushing strollers on Shabbat and
holidays across Orchard Lake.
Rabbi Jundefis working on erect-
ing an eruv to encompass the area
east of Orchard Lake Road.
But the community has come
a long way. Bais Chabad started
davening at Ealy Elementary
School, barely making a minyan.
Now they run a preschool and day
school, adult education classes, a
mikvah, three-times daily services
and a 15-year-old shul.
At the core of Bais Chabad are
mostly ba'alei teshuvah, but also
people "moving into the area. One
issue we had to deal with last
year — day schools and yeshiv-
as. A lot of people don't like to car-
pool, so ... we hired a bus to take
kids to Akiva, Bais Yaakov,
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah," Rabbi
Silberberg says.
Meryl and Steven Greene
moved four years ago from Oak
Park to West Bloomfield. One
daughter attends Bais Yaakov.
"I think in Oak Park you have
a tremendous amount of choices
— classes you can attend, a vari-
ety of synagogues, a larger
amount to draw from as far as
your friends and peer group, def-
initely more going on [in the frum
community], on a Shabbos two or
three different classes for men and
women to choose from, whereas
here, you have one," Mrs. Greene
says.
But "in Oak Park, I didn't find
my niche as a woman."
"In Oak Park, you're a five-
minute walk from any shul —
that was wonderful," she says. But
in West Bloomfield, "everybody
knows each other ... It's extreme-
ly warm here. Everybody knows
what's going on. Our baby's only
two months old and everybody cel-
ebrated."
Alan and Peggy Linker, who co-
own Sperber's Kosher Catering
with Mrs. Linker's parents, moved
seven years ago from Chicago.
They chose West Bloomfield be-
cause it is close to Sperber's cus-
tomers.
"I realized that we were pio-
neering but had a lot of faith that
the community would grow," Mr.
Linker says. "Aesthetically it's
beautiful, my kids have friends
to play with ... the shul we day-
en at [Ohel Moed] is just won-
derful for families." El
