n the day after Passover, I
flew to Poland to cover the
Teen Unity Mission.
After not eating bread for
eight straight days, I was desper-
ate. I wanted bread, I needed
bread, I craved bread.
But because I was running late
getting to the airport, I did not
have the chance to grab anything
to eat, much less a bagel.
So when my seat mate, Didi
Wainess, offered me some of her
bagel chips, I could not resist. I
grabbed the bag and stuffed hand-
ful after handful of the salty,
crunchy treats into my mouth, sa-
voring each bite with a groan of
pleasure.
While delicious for the moment,
the chips set off a bagel chips jones
that could not be satisfied for
Poland not only does not have
bagels, it does not have bagel
chips.
For over a week I craved the
treat. As soon as I had a chance to
conduct a Kosher Bites taste test,
I decided, bagel chips and cream
cheese would be it.
Upon returning to work, I raced
to four area stores. The first said
they were out and would have
them next week, the second car-
ried only two of the Manischewitz
line, the third had never heard of
them and the fourth carried most
of the Manischewitz line but no
others.
I have one question for the gro-
cery stores: What do you think this
is, Poland or something? Offer
more chips, find more varieties.
Although the Manischewitz brand
offers a tasty selection, this is a
capitalist society. We demand a
good bagel chip selection!
The four selections we had were
all fat free per one ounce serving,
had 100 to 110 calories, had 140
to 200 milligrams of sodium. They
cost from $1.50 per bag at Kroger
— where the best selection was
had — to $1.99 at Farmer Jack.
The Rating:
It is nice to be welcomed back
so heartily after a week-long ab-
sence. Greetings of "Hello. How
was your trip?" were quickly fol-
lowed by "When's the next taste
test?"
And despite Manischewitz's,
shall we say, wanting record in the
Kosher Bites column, they turned
out a good product that the testers
devoured.

Et Kosher Bites is a nonscien-
tific, consumer-oriented taste
test. Since consumers general-
ly do not engage in market re-
- search prior to picking products
to purdiase, we don't either. We
test what grabs us and what is
readily Available on grocery
market shelves. We offer our
honest, maven-driven opinions,
as best we can.
Please let us know if you
have any suggestions for this
column. We are willing to try al-
most any kosher product for the
sake of our readers.
