Still In The Country Best Jewish Cities Sought Convicted ex-Nazi guard appeals recent deportation decision. Washington — B'nai B'rith's Center for Jewish Identity is searching for the best small, medium and large cities for Jew- ish people in the United States. The CJI will publish the re- sults next year in a guide for sin- gles, young married couples and families with young children. To nominate a city, one must fill out a questionnaire available from the CJI by calling (202) 857-6577, or by sending an e- mail request to CJI@bnaib- rith.org. JULIE WIENER STAFF WRITER /— /-/ 0 n April 24, a federal im- migration jutige ordered him deported. But con- victed ex-Nazi guard Fer- dinand Hammer is appealing the decision to the Executive Of- fice for Immigration Review (EEOR), an agency of the U.S. Justice Department. Mr. Hammer's attorney, William Buffalino II, told the De- troit News that the Holtzman Amendment — the 1978 law that deports Nazi war criminals who immigrate to the United States — doesn't apply to Mr. Hammer. But Eli Rosenbaum, director of the Justice Department's Of- fice of Special Investigations (OSI), questioned Mr. Hammer's claims. Mr. Rosenbaum's agency launched the initial complaint to strip Mr. Hammer of his cit- izenship two years ago and will file a response to his appeal. Mr. Rosenbaum said it was not surprising that Mr. Hammer had chosen to appeal because he has "no reason not to" and he will be deported otherwise. Is there a chance Mr. Hammer's deportation orders will be re- versed? "I'm a strong believer in not tempting fate," said Mr. Rosenbaum. "Let me not try to predict." Susan Eastwood, public af- fairs assistant at the EEOR, said her office had not yet received Mr. Hammer's appeal, but that such appeals generally take sev- eral weeks to prepare. Ms. East- wood would not comment regarding Mr. Hammer's prospects for reversing the ini- tial ruling. "We are the judges and it would be inappropriate for us to comment on the case," she said. Should the EEOR reaffirm the deportation, Mr. Hammer, 77, of Sterling Heights, can then appeal to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. If he does not appeal or if all appeals result in upholding the original decision, Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will enforce Mr. Ferrdinand Hammer; appealing deportation descision. Hammer's deportation to Croa- tia. In prosecuting the case dur- ing Federal denaturalization proceedings last May, the OSI successfully proved that Mr. Hammer served as an armed Nazi Waffen-SS guard at Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen and Flossenberg death camps. Pros- ecutors also showed how Mr. Hammer had obtained an entry visa to the United States and eventual citizenship by supply- ing erroneous information about his wartime activities. ❑ Camp Experiences Boost Judaism Miami — A University of Mia- mi study confirms that Jewish sleep-away camps have an im- portant influence on adult Jew- ish practices. Dr. Ira Sheskin, in a three- year study, compared Jewish de- mographic research in Delaware, Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida against statistics from a Jewish camp in North Carolina. He defined Jewish camps as those that hold Shabbat services or have significant Jewish con- tent. "Although we cannot prove cause and effect," Dr. Sheskin said, "there is a significant cor- relation between attending a Jewish sleep-away camp as a child and Jewish behaviors — such as lighting Chanukah can- dles — as an adult." Western Wall Tunnels Popular The Western Wall tunnels, which were the focus of Pales- tinian riots last year, have be- come one of Jerusalem's most popular tourist spots. According to the Israel Min- istry of Tourism, the opening of a tunnel exit near the Via Do- lorosa last year has allowed for easier access to the tunnels, which run parallel to the West- ern Wall. The tunnels were construct- ed around 165 BCE to carry wa- ter into the city. Some of the stones that make up the tunnel walls weigh 50 tons.
