ing up these foods that are part of good nutrition. "If you measure broccoli in a 1/2-cup portion a day, you're OK. Patients need to understand they don't need to comply with some of these guidelines to a paranoid status." Another example in which Traver says patients often are too severe in following a food inter- action list is with MAO In- hibitors, or anti-depressants such /- as Parnate, Nardil and Marplan. Foods that can cause reactions with any of these medicines, such as high blood pressure and headaches, include all aged, fer- mented and smoked foods or bev- erages because of their high tyramine levels. Avocados, raisins, bananas, chocolate and anything with caffeine are in- cluded in the list. "People will go too far in elim- inating cheese from any dish, for example, when in fact a little amount would be all right," said Traver. "The key is to take a lit- tle at lunch or a little at dinner. For some, though, it's kind of hard to keep track in their minds." Donnici points out that people must maintain consistency in their eating habits. For example, those who must limit their green vegetables need to watch out in the summer and fall months, when people normally prepare more fresh vegetables with meals. At the same time, some people are too extreme in limiting the amounts of certain foods on their interaction lists, others are too lenient, especially when it is a food or beverage they crave, said Donnici. Some even completely ignore various food warnings. "One of the biggest problems in the healthcare industry is the non-compliant patient," he said. "And with these patients, their non-compliance is not communi- cated back to medical profes- sionals, who could give them alternate therapy." ❑ Food And Drug Interactions Foods: Avocados, raisins, ba- nanas, cheese, cured meat (sausage) meat tenderizers, sour cream, yogurt, beer, red wine, sherry, caffeine, and chocolate Drugs: MAO Inhibitors.
