AND NOW! On to our next mystery person:

This psychologist was born in 1922 in Tel Aviv. He was an early critic of spanking children, and an advocate of
what is popularly known today as "attachment parenting." He encouraged moms and dads to "treat your chil-
dren as guests." (If company came over and accidentally spilled the gravy, would you say, "Don't worry about
it," or scream, "You idiot! Look at the mess you made! Now get a paper towel and clean it up right now!" he
asked.) Name the psychologist and his famous book.

Q: Was songwriter Ned Wash-
ington Jewish?
A: Tell Me Why has re-
searched here, there and every-
where, but couldn't find a single
Jewish connection to Mr. Wash-
ington. Born in 1901 in Scran-
ton, Pa., Washington was a
lyricist, the man behind such
popular numbers as "When
You Wish Upon a Star,"
"Rawhide," "I Don't Stand
a Ghost of a Chance" and
"Stella by Starlight."

Q: I recently saw a docu-
mentary on the great the-
atrical families, such as the
Barrymores and the Redfords,
of the United States and Eng-
land. I was wondering whether
there are, or were, any Jewish the-
atrical families?
A: You need to ask? Just go
to your next synagogue board
meeting and you'll see plenty of
theatrics.
All right, all right, so I'll get
to the point. Yes, of course,
there were Jewish families
whose activities in the enter-
tainment business spanned
more than one generation. Most
began in the Yiddish theater,
which itself did not come into
being until the mid-1800s.
Probably the most notable
Jewish theatrical family were
the Adlers, pioneers of the
Yiddish stage. Few today re-
member the founding member
of the family, Jacob Adler (1855-
1926), but he was the leading
personality on the Yiddish stage
in Russia, London and New
York. Flamboyant and hand-
some, he was a Jewish matinee
idol. Married three times, Adler
had two wives who also acted
on stage. His daughters, Celia,
Frances and Julia, appeared
with the Yiddish theater, while
another daughter, Stella,
performed in English and be-

ductor of the London Sympho-
ny.
The Kaminskis of Poland
were among the best-known
Jewish theatrical families
of Europe. Avraham Yitzhak
(1867-1918), his wife Esther
Rachel (1870-1925), and their
daughter Ida (1899-1980),
acted in a variety of roles
and toured extensively. After
World War II, Ida Kaminska
returned to Poland and re-es-
tablished a Yiddish theater.
In the anti-Semitic campaign
of 1968, Ida and her husband,
actor Meir Melman, left
Poland and immigrated to
the United States. In 1975
they settled in Israel, and Ida
joined the Yiddish Theater
in Tel Aviv. In 1937, Ida's
brother Yosef settled in Pales-
tine, later becoming first vio-
list for the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra.

The Thomashefsky family of
the Ukraine got its start in
the theater with Pincus (1842-
1914), a cantor and son of a
cantor. In 1881, he emigrated
from Russia with his son,
Baruch, to the United States.
Both found work in a New York
cigarette factory. He later or-
ganized a theatrical troupe of
his own and wrote a number of
Yiddish plays. Baruch (1868-
1939) changed his name to
Boris, and he became the pio-
neer of Yiddish theater in
America. Boris introduced the
plays of Shakespeare, Goethe
and other classic writers to the
Yiddish stage. As an impre-
sario, he brought Jewish actors
and acting troupes to America. Send questions to Tell Me Why,
