doesn't have anyone in mind

The name of her party? "Pni-
na Rosenbloom for Knesset," she
says. Her campaign bumper
stickers will be rosy pink and
black, just like the packaging on
her cosmetics because "It's
brought me luck."
Her slogan? "I haven't thought
of one yet. Then, after a pause, "
`We need a rosy politics."'
She laughs a musical, de-
lighted laugh. "'A rosy politics,"'
she repeats. "I just thought of
that. Not bad."
Brains, proven competence, a
rags-to-riches history, and re-
markably wide popularity among
the Israeli public. If there is a
doubt about the legitimacy of Pn-
ina Rosenbloom's candidacy for
the Knesset, it is that some might

With conservative Republicans
firmly in control of both houses
of Congress and groups like the
Christian Coalition impatient
for serious legislative action on
their religious agenda, Jewish
forces in the capital are on high
alert.
The first skirmish is almost
certain to come as church-state
separationists, including leading
Jewish groups, mount an all-out
effort to defeat a repackaged, re-
energized and misnamed "reli-
gious freedom" amendment to
the Constitution, set for intro-
duction in the House this week.
That measure is necessary to
"reverse 30 years of court rulings
such as those against prayer in
the public schools," according to
Rep. Ernest Jim Istook (R-Okla.),
its chief sponsor.
But Jewish groups insist that
we already have a religious free-
dom amendment — the First
Amendment, which guarantees
both freedom of religious ex-
pression and freedom from gov-
ernment-established religion.
Mr. Istook's real goal, many be-
lieve, is to destroy that funda-
mental protection in the interests
of the narrow and aggressive
Christianity of his religious right
backers.
Americans, Mr. Istook's crit-
ics insist, already have the right
to pray in schools, to say grace
before meals, to read their Bibles
and to wear religious symbols;
what they don't have under cur-
rent law is the right to have their
