Light could not have predicted
he'd be living in Germany — or
that he would meet and fall in
love with a German woman.
While at JTS, Rabbi Light
met Wiebke Muller, a native of
Hamburg. She was a convert,
deeply interested in Judaism,
who was studying for a master's
degree in Jewish art.
By the time her two-year pro-
gram of studies ended and she
was getting ready to return to
Hamburg, she and Rabbi Light
were engaged. "So we decided
that I'd try- to find a position in
Germany so we could be togeth-
er," he explained.
One of the places to which he
applied was Dusseldorf, which is
three hours away from Hamburg,
where Ms. Wiebke would be
working and writing her master's
thesis. After a visit to the Dus-
seldorf Jewish community in
March, where he met Rabbi
Michael Goldberger and other
key officials, he was offered the
position. He accepted right away.

It's been a challenge ever
since he arrived. Besides the typ-
ical duties of an assistant rabbi,
including teaching and helping
Rabbi Goldberg, a Swiss native,
with daily minyans and Shab-
bat services, Rabbi Light is in-
volved in many projects, some of
which he initiated.
For instance, he started a Sat-
urday afternoon course for col-
lege age students and also began
a new custom of having Shabbat
dinners for high school students
in his apartment, which is con-
veniently located right across the
street from the JCC.
He's also teaching a twice-
monthly course in Torah read-
ing for college students and he
started monthly gatherings for
the 15 American Jewish families
living in Dusseldorf.
The young American rabbi is
fully immersed in Jewish life.
And he's also adapting to the
larger German milieu. He's be-
come more fluent in German,
has formed friendships with
Germans (both Jews and non-
Jews) and is enjoying the varied
cultural attractions of Dussel-
dorf.
Overall, living as a young Jew
in Germany has turned out to be
