An internationally known scholar and historian,
Norma Goldman finds her passion in the stories of local writer&
or most of her 75 years, stories have been a great part
of Norma Goldman's existence.
As a Latin scholar, she produced a textbook to teach
students the language by reading the love stories found
in the poetry of Ovid. As a seamstress, she learned to
make authentic Roman and Greek costumes which tell
the story of how those people lived.
As an internationally known scholar, she taught the world how
the Romans built a fabric canopy for their Colosseum, a lesson
recently featured in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
documentary.
Although her scholarly storytelling is rewarding, she finds
greater fulfillment in her quiet involvement helping local Jews
to tell their own stories. As the moderator of the Jewish Com-
munity Center's•monthly Writers Corner, she has helped pub-
lish the participants' poetry, short stories and essays for the past
40 years.
"She is the most unusual person. She has such facets to her
personality," said Sara Littman, a Writers Corner participant.
"She is so smart, she knows so much and she is so talented.
"She is so nice, a really terrific person, such an inspiration,"
Ms. Littman said.
Ms. Goldman, a retired Wayne State University professor of
classical language, said she became involved in the group 45 years
ago when her father joined.
"I went to one meeting and was hooked," she said.
Since then, she has led the Senior Adult Division group of am-
ateur writers who passionately compose what they present to
each other on the third Friday of each month.
"Many of them have led very full lives," she said. "But instead
of sitting at home and vegetating, they come in with their poet-
ry, their essays, their short stories."
Through the year, she collects their best works, edits them and
puts them together in a bound volume, copies of which are sent
to the permanent collections at the Detroit Public Library and
the American Jewish Archives. The volume is also for sale each
year at the JCC's annual book fair.
Ms. Goldman said she is impressed with the depth and breadth
of their works.
"Some are very naive writers and some write almost profes-
sionally," she said.
She says each work is the story of one person which, when knit-
ted together with others, becomes the fabric of history.
"History is made of a group of stories," she said. "It is through
the telling of the stories that we learn what life was like then."
While her work in the local community is fulfilling, she is per-
haps best known in the international arena where she uncov-
ers the stories of the past. The BBC documentary on the Roman
Colosseum aired in England and will be broadcast in the United
States this fall.
Additionally, she has written scholarly works on ancient Ro-
man and Greek clothing and footwear, including one piece pub-
lished last year on the dress of the goddess Isis. This spring she
held a fashion show of Greek tunics in Florida.
"I try to make the ancient world come alive and stay alive," she
