Mr. Sky agrees. He and his
friends "are very secure and
wouldn't feel threatened if the
woman made more money." He
believes both partners should con-
tribute financially and in house-
hold chores. Doing so "sets a good
example for your kids."
David Lipski, 27, says he
would welcome the opportunity
for his spouse, a third-year med-
ical student, to top his salary.
"My wife could potentially
make more than I, and it would
just be better for the family. As
far as the pride issue goes, I don't
take pride in my economic
growth. I take pride in my rela-
tionships with friends and fami-
y."
Having less pressure to be the
sole breadwinner will allow him
to spend more time with his son,
he adds.
Jon Koman, an orthopedic
surgery resident who lives in
West Bloomfield, says "the only
problem with a woman dating a
man who makes less money
would be if thecouple had not es-
tablished what their 'roles' were
going to be, as in expectations
that one may have of the other
that were not met. In a stable re-
lationship it shouldn't matter
what salary [each partner
makes]."
- Even a generation ago, there
were women who looked beyond
a man's stats.
"My mother had a college edu-
cation and a master's degree
when she met my dad," says Mr.
Koman. "He didn't finish college
and worked as a real estate agent.
She didn't care. They've been
married 33 years."
