groups should never ban Israel's
representatives. Instead, make
them miserable. Every Israeli
leader should be welcomed and
then, in the finest of Jewish tra-
ditions, yelled at after the em-
brace. Fax them, mail them, get
in their face if they refuse to con-
front the issue.
Reform and Conservative Jews
also should skip absolutist de-
mands and seek creative solu-
tions for this 250-year-old
dilemma.
Don't ban Israeli
leaders. Embrace
them — then make
them miserable.
One idea is to push for the re-
vamping of Israel's Ministry of
Religion into the Ministry of Jew-
ish Education. Make its staff only
Jewish educators. This could in-
corporate a Ministry of Values,
which the head of Israel's Na-
tional Religious Party recently
suggested. Yes, he's Orthodox.
The truth is, we are not all con-
sidered to be Jews by various
groups. Our rabbis must deal
openly and publicly with the
sticky issue of conversion.
The Orthodox do not and will
not accept non-Orthodox conver-
sion. Nor need they. We can still
work together under the um-
brellas of "the Jewish communi-
ty" and "Jewish interests."
Further, it's right to push, as
some non-Orthodox synagogues
are doing, membership in the Re-
form and Conservative Zionist
groups prior to December's World
Zionist Organization Congress.
Higher representation from these
groups means more money for
their programs in Israel. In fact,
in the past year about $483,000
went to Orthodox groups, just
over $1 million to both Conserv-
ative and Reform operations.
Thus, four times as much went
to non-Orthodox groups.
Mind you, the separation of re-
ligion and state in Israel is far
away. Orthodox political parties
will not simply give up power.
But Reform and Conservative
Jews can change tactics to be
more effective. And they must go
the difficult path of seeking to
bring more of their Orthodox col-
leagues into the battle. After all,
everyone's fighting for the Jew-
ish people — not just one slice of
it. El
