Name Telephone Address City State Zip I or me, the harbinger of sum- mer is not the crack of a bat as it slams into the ball on opening day nor is it the an- nual bathing suit sale at the local department store. No, I know that summer is just around the corner when I hear the chiming of bells and the sounding of a warped version of "Pop Goes The Weasel" from a slow-moving truck. While little robin red breast may usher in spring, nothing re- calls the first days of summer like the Good Humor man. So, when I heard the chimes and the cheap recording for the first time in many long winter months, I acted more like an 8- year-old than a 28-year-old as I rushed inside my house to scrape together enough coinage for an ice cream sandwich. I savored each bite, taking care to lick up any er- rant drops of melted bliss. As we approach the final days of a somewhat dismal spring, I am happy to announce that my neigh- borhood ice cream man is back in action. For this taste test, we wanted to see if the amount of fat in an ice cream sandwich made any differ- ence in the taste so we made ran- dom selections from Kroger's freezer shelves. The Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream Sandwiches — vanilla ice cream with Pepperidge Farms cookies — had three ice cream sandwiches per box, each sandwich boasting 260 calories, a startling 13 grams of fat, 31 grams of carbohydrates, four grams of protein and 65 mil- ligrams of cholesterol. The pack- age cost $3.29. The Klondike Big Bear Vanil- la Flavored Ice Cream Sandwich- es carry seven grams of fat, 200 calories, 15 milligrams of choles- terol, 130 milligrams of sodium, 31 grams of carbohydrates and three grams of protein. It cost $3.39 for a package of six sand- wiches that were roughly the same size as the Haagen-Dazs sandwiches. The Betty Crocker Healthy Temptations had half the calories and was half the size of the Klondike, but had 1.5 grams of fat, 95 milligrams of sodium, 20 grams of carbohydrates and three grams of protein. The box of 12 sand- wiches cost $3.59. L The Rating: The eAArish \ews • 27676 FranklM Road • Sutafteld, LIMN For further tnformaflob call Barb or Kart]) at (810) 354-6060, ext. 269 or 270. Clearly fat played a big part in the taste of the ice cream sand- wiches. The one carrying the high- est fat count got the highest rating, the one lacking the fat garnered t_h a 1 oNvacf But one must remember, sum- mer is a time when cooler cloth- ing may mean more bulges showing. Although the fat may make the ice cream taste better, the fat also makes the bulges big- ger. Therefore, a higher rating may not be what one looks for with ice cream sandwiches. (_\ Haagen-Dazs Vanilla and Chocolate "Can I give this five forks? Mm- mmm. Great chocolate flavor!" — Patty McMurray "Pepperidge Farms cookie and Haagen-Dazs? What a team!" — Julie Edgar Klondike Premium Big Bear "Yummy cookie but a bit too much ice cream." — Lynne Korzstantin "Creamy ice cream, good cookie. Yummy but second to Haagen- Dazs." —Debbie Schultz Betty Crocker Healthy Temptations Low Fat "Back to the mixing bowl, Betty!" — Gayle Baldi "Tasteless but I feel like I'm not cheating by consuming mega calo- nes." — Shari Cimino ❑ St Kosher Bites is a nonscien- tific, consumer-oriented taste test.
