dications of growing security co-
operation between Israeli and
Palestinian authorities.
But the slightly more positive
feeling was tempered by concern
that new terrorist acts could
quickly reverse the recent fragile
gains.
"There's a very strong aware-
ness that whatever progress we've
seen ... could be undone by an-
other act of terrorism," said a
source close to the peace process.
"Right now, you'd have to say that
things are still very, very fragile."

Agudah In
Washington

Just in case decision-makers in
Washington needed a remedial
education about the growing po-
litical clout of the Orthodox com-
munity, a delegation of 200
leaders of Agudat,h Israel of Amer-
ica came to Washington for a dose
of politicking and education in
church-state jurisprudence.
"There's a perception of many
in high office that the Orthodox
Jewish community lives in seclu-
sion in certain oases like Brook-
lyn and Monsey," said Rabbi
Moshe Sherer, Agudah's presi-
dent. "We want them to realize
that we represent an Orthodox
constituency that reaches across
all corners of this nation, from
coast to coast."
At least 23 states were repre-
sented in the Agudah mission,
which heard from Vice President
Al Gore, Department of Health
and Human Services Secretary
Donna Shalala and Stuart Eizen-
stat, the Commerce Department
official who represents the gov-
ernment in negotiations with
Swiss banks on looted Jewish as-
sets. They also drew at least 20
legislators and numerous staffers
to a Capitol Hill lunch.
But the high point of the day
was a meeting at the Supreme
Court with Justice Antonin Scalia,
who has taken controversial
stands against the strict inter-
pretation of church-state separa-
tion favored by most Jewish
groups — but not by Agudah.
"Justice Scalia drove home the
point that religion is part of the
very fabric of American life," said
Abba Cohen, the group's Wash-
ington representative. "In the
past, the Supreme Court said that
the intent of the Establishment
Clause was to make sure goyern-
ment does not favor any particu-
lar religion. But their approach
now seems to be to enforce reli-
gious neutrality and remove any
concept of religious belief from
public life."
Justice Scalia criticized that
view — music to Agudah's ears.
But the real meaning of the re-
cent mission to Washington, Rab-
bi Sherer said, was the message
it conveyed about an activated Or-
thodox community. ❑
