emy and began offering formal
camps. They were so successful
that they subsidized his coaching
career.
A dual opportunity drew Mike
Lende to Detroit: a coaching po-
sition with the Detroit Falcons of
the Colonial League and a new
market for his hockey school.
Lende served as defensive coach
for the Falcons in 1994-95 before
moving to the Vipers last season.
With the Vipers last year, a
Lende highlight was a dozen
games behind the bench as de-
fensive coach. Then-assistant
Ludzik worked with Lende and
head coach Rick Dudley watched
from the stands.
"In one respect, I felt I deserved
that," Lende says. "But in anoth-
er respect, I had (NHL veterans)
Lee Norwood, Phil Bourque and
Brad Shaw on the bench — I was
25 and I had guys who were 30 on
the team, and I was running the
defense."

three years ago. He has bowled
three 300 games, and games of
299, 298 and 297, as well as two
800 series.

An IHL rule that allows only
the head coach and one assistant
behind the bench forced Lende to
the sidelines. The Vipers lost just
two of the 12 games in which he
worked behind the bench.
When Ludzik became head
coach this season, Lende expect-
ed to be his assistant. It didn't
work out, so Lende concentrated
on his hockey schools. But re-
cently Ludzik asked him to return
to his video analysis in time for
the IHL playoffs.
"I've got to study each team. I've
got to know everything about each
hockey club," Lende says. -
When the playoffs end, Lende
hopes to begin Act III of his career
and move up in the professional
coaching ranks. He believes his
video work will be a key.
"I can't be like everyone else,"
he says. "I didn't play in the
NHL and I'm young. I've got to
find my niche, so my niche is the
video." ❑
